New York City Police Department volunteer police officers Eugene Marshalik (left) and Nicholas Todd Pekearo were shot and killed March 14, 2007, by a gunman on a rampage in Greenwich Village, New York. (AP Photo/NYPD)

City officials said the two auxiliary officers, the first to die in the line of duty since 1993, would get full police honors at their funerals this weekend. Only five other auxiliary officers have died on the job in the city’s history.

Also, according to the City of New York, the officers surviving family members WILL NOT RECEIVE ANY DEATH BENEFITS.

From SFGate.com -

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Friday that the families of two unarmed NYPD volunteers who died trying to stop a gunman are ineligible for police line-of-duty death benefits, but could qualify for more than $400,000 from other programs.

Garvin

And we have this from NYPD – Garvin was less-than-honorably discharged from the Marine Corps Reserve in 1988 after nearly three years of service. Big whoop! Three years in the late 80′s as a reserve. Since I joined in 86 I KNOW that there was NO ACTION for the Marine Reserves then… be he in a ground or aviation unit. Leaves out the possibility of a service connected psychiatric disorder.

My basic comment is: thank God he was killed by the cops. Saves the time and expense of a trial adding to more stress on the killed officers and poor bartender’s families.
